!KDE takes forever to get to useable state - dual core/6GB RAM/nvidia driver; 3 VDs w/ plasmoids - Do I need: more ram? cpu? better gpu?
about a year ago from web-
@djotaku Avoiding GPU's with propietary drivers is always a plus.

@djotaku you probably want a GPU with decent FOSS drivers...

OMG! It sounds like Windows next generation operating system.
-
IMHO “use different hardware” isn't the right solution. Whether it's an encouragement for FLOSS stuff or not.
-
@ralesk well, if it was opensource one might be able to give an answer, but that's not the case :)

that's plenty of hardware. define "forever", and watching what happens with something like bootchart would be enlightening.

Forever == 5 minutes or more - need to time. Seems like forever in compute time. FWIW - my wife's KDE comes up quick - 2 VD and no plasmoids
-
My wife's computer has an SSD and I have a HDD if that makes a difference. Also she has quad core.
-
@djotaku my system loads in ca 30 sec, it's 5 year old laptop w/ kde 4.8.3. What distro so u have?
-
Fedora 16 - latest KDE packages. But there are plasmoids on each desktop - even if most of them are just folder views
-
Mi system have a Athlon 64 dual core, 1,5 GB RAM, and takes 35 seconds to be ready... maybe you have a configuration problem
-
@djotaku how many plasmoids do u have? I have some in my tray, and terminal, editor and pdf viewer a being loaded at the start...
-
@djotaku ... It takes another 20 sec after i log in. It's dualcore 2ghz and 2gb ram with amd grafics, 1gb
-
http://ur1.ca/49cer you can see my activities and the plasmoids I have running
-
see my message to ever in this thread to see the link to my desktop and the plasmoids I have running.
-
*OFFTOPIC* Excelent TF2 wallpaper!
-
thanks! I really like it. I like so many wallpapers that I'm glad I can have different wallpapers per monitor per VD per activity
-
@djotaku check ur system monitor first for hungry processes, if the load seems ok in working condition, check the autostart and demons
-
@djotaku i had similar issues with opensuse w/ kde. Laptop was so samn slow, so i gave up an installed arch. Works like a charm now.
-
@djotaku the grafics driver might be the reason, was for me,at least. Propriety too resource hungry, free didnt work good enough.
-
@aseigo @amon0thoth1 @grnspn timed it this time - took 9 min 8 seconds
-
Do you start your system up with full activities and widgets like RSS, weather and other plasmoids needing updtes?
-
@amon0thoth1 probably? Not sure how often weather updates. But I'd imagine the answer is yes.
-
@djotaku default is every 30min, so yes, they are all being updated.Really, check the daemons, kill the ones u dont need.Kill some plasmoids
-
@djotaku try to install another distro, like debian or arch.Debian is very fast, but has older kde(4.7?),arch is fast too, takes time to setup.
-
@djotaku That's wow. I have a Pentium Dual Core (C2D era), 2GB ram, intel GMA965; KDE starts up from DM screen in less than a minute :/
-
@djotaku Could you turn off all activities with widgets updating. And startup your computer with a simple and clean activity (no updaters)?
-
@djotaku I suspect your sys is booting up w/ too many apps updating simultaneously on the early session. Once 1st activity is up go next
-
@grnspn @amon0thoth1 new activity with no plasmoids - same amount of time ~9 min. So what else could it be? Perhaps the dropbox or yakuake?
-
@djotaku Weird! I was hoping deactivating other activities & booting up a plain one would solve it. You've plenty hwr & there is no OS fault
-
@djotaku And all other activities are stopped?
-
@amon0thoth1 yup! I also did one without a session loaded to make sure it wasn't ktorrent or google music or yakuake holding it up
-
@amon0thoth1 perhaps it's related to nepomuk or something? Next dent I'll go through the exact order of events on that last reboot
-
@amon0thoth1 boot up - after ~2 minutes got !KDE starting sound and could switch desktops, open up kicker, etc. Then hit control-q for activ
-
@amon0thoth1 then the desktop took another 4 minutes to be responsive again - everything plasma related - desktop, toolbars, etc nonresponsi
-
@amon0thoth1 after that loaded up my main desktop with the weather widget and all that - it came up instantaneously so I don't was issues b4
