At the very least I want to be able to look my kids into the eyes and say "I'm really sorry, we tried our best, but we still failed."

same for me… and I now actually have kids to fight for. It’s also the reason why I contribute to !freenet.

Similar feelings re: future generations, though I don't presently intend to have children :)

@lxoliva: The full statement is a bit more colourful, but sadly too big to fit into 140 chars :P

@arnebab: BTW, why #FreeNet and not #GNUnet or #I2P or something else? Just curious, I never got the time to get into the detail of those.

#freenet does quite well: 4 GSoC projects this year (including transport plugins == steganography!) and it’s getting better step by step.

#freenet is the one which is focussed on #censorship resistance. Everything it offers originates there - including darknet, pseudonyms, …

    • Arne Babenhauserheide Arne Babenhauserheide

interestingly google sponsors freenet even though it makes it possible to step out of googles view. Possibly remaining hacker-idealism…

    • Arne Babenhauserheide Arne Babenhauserheide

…or just the pragmatic view that this helps strengthening googles image as the good guy. As long as that helps freenet, I won’t complain…

@arnebab: Moo. As long as it works for now, we just have to make sure we're not dependent on them.

@arnebab: Hmmm, would it make sense to run #FreeNet on a lil' home-based server or is it better to have it on the laptop/desktop itself?

    • Arne Babenhauserheide Arne Babenhauserheide

some of the core devs run it on a small home-server - the WebOfTrust might bring that to its limits, though.

    • Arne Babenhauserheide Arne Babenhauserheide

I would not advise running it on a laptop, though. Better uptime yields higher performance (optimizing routing and connections)
