      checked it a long time ago, patched xf86-video-siliconmotion worked with an external monitor (no xrandr); what is "properly" for you?

      @mtjm being able to use the monitor's standard resolutions, for one. I recall I was stuck at 1024x600 last I tried. xrandr required

      never had this working on gNS (with fbdev); editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf should make it use different resolution

      @mtjm I've been using an old (and functional) -siliconmotion driver. it breaks on upgrades

      @mtjm editing xorg.conf is not something you want to do in the middle of a presentation e.g. to scale a lowres video (no hw accel)
