    I correspond semi-regularly w/ someone whose last name is .70 #Jaro_Winkler distance from #Targaryen, but I now read it as the latter. :-/

      Got me thinking: ∃ a similarity algorithm computing how closely 2 strings sound alike to native English speakers (#Soundex notwithstanding)?

      You'll probably want to start with Soundex: http://identi.ca/url/70319382

      @nickdaly, you didn't read the whole dent. I said *NOTWITHSTANDING* #Soundex. I was pondering a more precise instrument than that.

      Totally understand. Hey, have you looked at Soundex? That might work. #notatroll

      @bkuhn Wikipedia suggests #metaphone as a #soundex descendant often used in spell checkers.

      @evan, I lol'ed. ☺ @spacehobo, What I'm really wondering: ∃ something that gives a % sound-alike that's accurate? Don't think Metaphone does

      BTW my interest in English sound similarity algorithms is just academic. Just like to pretend I'm still a Computer Scientist on my downtime.

      @bkuhn All phonetic algorithms I've seen have been like soundex: piled-on hacks for regional exceptions and ridiculous loanwords.

      @bkuhn I am sure you are more of a Computer Scientist than I will ever be!
