Umm… they joined the foundation not opened their drivers. Unless I misunderstood the article?

I recently installed !linux #mint 13 and there are no proprietary drivers. I have an #Nvidia graphic card.

you can also install vrms (virtual rms) to find out(/keep watching) which of your installed packages are not free! ;)

@mariolopez The nvidia driver is still proprietary

Probably you're using the Nouveau drivers, unfortunately they're unofficial...

      @mikankun Really? I though it wasn't.

@giako87 yeah, maybe I'm using those drivers.

@bijan - You know VRMS is a joke right? It's incomplete and misleading, and unwise to rely on it for guidance.

    • Bijan Bijan Linux , Jason Self

@xjself no i didn't know that. can you tell me more or why it is misleading?:) cause i think it looks in APT database or something like that

@bijan 1. Claims to be a Virtual RMS but doesn't evaluate things the same way he would and

    • Jason Self Jason Self Linux , Bijan

@bijan 2. Doesn't identify all nonfree software on the computer, providing false/misleading sense of freedom.

nvidia isn't helping in the opensource drivers side. nouveau driver is independent work and that's probably what you have installed.

@jxself thank you for information, reason #1:i agree, rms opinion changed slightly over time,so vrms follow Debian Free Software Guidelines

    • Bijan Bijan Linux , Jason Self

@jxself the second reason: if it's true, that would be a problem :( but again DFSG should be the reference. I'll check that.thanks again ;)

      whereas #AMD is f*$#ing us...

    • Jason Self Jason Self Linux , Bijan

@bijan But following DFSG is also partly the problem. Defines "free" differently. Points to some manuals & then ROFLs. Part of problem #1.

    • Jason Self Jason Self Linux , Bijan

@bijan If it purports to be a "Virtual RMS" it should follow "FSF free", not "Debian free", not "Fedora free" not someone else's "free."

    • Jason Self Jason Self Linux , Jason Self , Bijan

@bijan So that's part of why it's incomplete and misleading.

@izem4mazigh you got it all wrong - #AMD is giving docs to write proper free drivers, #nvidia is doing nothing. AMD good, nvidia bad.

    • Cyber Killer Cyber Killer LIzem

@izem4mazigh not to mention #AMD has both cheaper and more powerfull GPUs (and less power hungry) than #nvidia

@jxself i should mentioned this earlier:vrms follows DFSG in only some cases, the rest is FSF's. but i agree with you about the name...

...maybe the minute they start following DFSG even in only rare cases, they should changed it's name to something rather than "rms" ;)

      Really ? It's a mess for me. I've #Radeon HD6370M and everytime I need to upgrade #Xserver and thus #Catalyst ...

    • Cyber Killer Cyber Killer LIzem

@izem4mazigh I was talking about free drivers, which work ok (as far as talking about supported features) Binary blobs are a different thing
