#Shuttleworth kissing Bill Gates as.sterisk. What good is !GNU/ !Linux resiliency if it'll run on Windows #Azure #cloud? http://ur1.ca/9gq4x

@metztli I'm not sure I get your point. how is Azure supporting non-Windows client OSes a bad thing?

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli Azure will run any distro, and imho no harm is done by creating disk images that target it.

Hummm... @wgreenhouse: "I'm not sure I get your point". Could it be because you did not read the second sentence of my comment?

However, by all means @wgreenhouse, run your !Ubuntu in #Azure! After all, #Microsoft has "embraced" !Linux ... & its reaching for its neck!

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli there are a lot of non-free VM solutions out there, e.g. VMware. I wouldn't say Azure is inherently less reliable than those.

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli they need to support !Linux on Azure to avoid losing clientele for Azure. there are still many things Win servers can't do.

    • Jose R Rodriguez Jose R Rodriguez Linux , Will Gardella

Tell me @wgreenhouse, do you think that #Microsoft was "unaware" of #Stuxnet #Duqu #Flame?…that it didn't collaborate with States involved?

    • Jose R Rodriguez Jose R Rodriguez Ubuntu users , GNU's Not Unix , Linux , Will Gardella

Now, @wgreenhouse, would you blindly trust #Windows -based #Azure fabric as reliable & un-compromised to run your !GNU !Linux !Ubuntu on it?

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli no, of course I wouldn't. Nor would I trust other non-free VM hypervisors such as VMware.

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli yes, I do. no point in mentioning such plans to microsoft when .us/.il/whoever could easily buy vulns on the open market w/o MS.

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli a result of MS's closed security model is that there are companies such as VUPEN specializing in unreleased Windows 0days.

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli ...sold only to "friendly" (NATO) governments. informing MS about these before use would be unnecessary and counterproductive.

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli to reiterate, of course Azure+Ubuntu is less reliable than Ubuntu running in a FOSS VM, but it's also better than Azure+Windows.

If we assume that #Flame had been around for at least 4yrs, does it follow that #Microsoft is so "stupid" as to not notice unusual patterns?

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli it was undetected by the software security industry too; I think there was much complacency about a MITM against Windows Update.

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli don't forget that the search for #Flame only started when Iran's CERT noticed a huge "unusual pattern:" whole systems being wiped!

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli #flame also hid better by infecting few boxes at once; typical botnets infect thousands at a time, still often take ~2yrs. to find

    • Jose R Rodriguez Jose R Rodriguez Linux , Will Gardella

The patterns I'd in mind: the info collected by #Microsoft when #Windows calls home. I'm sure the data pattern pre- & after- #Flame changed

    • Jose R Rodriguez Jose R Rodriguez Linux , Will Gardella

If the whole Middle East was #Flame focal point of dissemination (no "few boxes"), relevant pattern should have raised concern at #Microsoft

    • Jose R Rodriguez Jose R Rodriguez Linux , Will Gardella

Either by #Microsoft's willful omission/collab w/States or by Windows mediocrity, !Linux security/stability are compromised if run on #Azure

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli also per the kaspersky report, #flame owned update in both directions, altering both server and phone-home communications.

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli I don't disagree. there's just no plausible evidence for the collaboration theory, at all.

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli kaspersky report also indicated it wasn't anything like the whole Middle East, but about a hundred selected boxes at a time.

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Jose R Rodriguez

@metztli if #flame is your main reason for mistrusting Azure *more* than other proprietary VM proivders, I think you're kidding yourself.

    • Jose R Rodriguez Jose R Rodriguez Linux , Will Gardella

Problem is #Flame erases its tracks, making it difficult for 3rd parties to realize extent of infection —initial rumor was whole Middle East

    • Jose R Rodriguez Jose R Rodriguez Linux , Will Gardella

Based on #Microsoft/govt alliance to impose/disseminate #Windows to extract tribute from developing world, #Flame alliance is plausible, too

@metztli right. more recent hypothesis is that there was a fairly constant small number of hosts, adding new ones as others were deleted.

I don't use proprietary VM providers, I just pointed out that #Flame & Windows mediocrity are enough reasons to avoid !Ubuntu on #Azure

    • Will Gardella Will Gardella Linux , Toksyuryel

@toksyuryel I wouldn't. but I also can't fathom why anyone would use a non-free VM host in general, be it VMware or Azure.

@metztli no question that MS and US share an interest in MS having profitable exports. but that interest is hurt by every botnet scandal.
