If I wanted to allow an OS to REMOVE anything from my computer, I'd still be using #Windows. I am unimaginably disappointed in !Trisquel
about 11 months ago from web- Hilton Garcia Fernandes and Gildas Cotomale like this.
-
@laurelrusswurm What did it do?
-
@mvdan It removed the broadcom wireless driver
-
@laurelrusswurm the internet is overrated…no need for WiFi.

@parlementum I kind of like being able to blog. And that driver is how my formerly !Trisquel box connects to the !identiverse :(
-
@laurelrusswurm Well, that's why they're called Free Software (only) Distros :-)
-
@mvdan @laurelrusswurm I'd call this Forcibly Free Software. :-o It's OK to install only FS, but not to remove what the user has installed.
-
@Mvdan. Hello mate :)
-
@hgfernan Not really. Package managers do remove software that the distro no longer supports - this is normal and reasonable
-
@expatpaul Agreed if it's based on incompatible software versions. Not agreed if it's based on license incompatibility only.
-
@hgfernan Not really. If the distro no longer supports a package, you would expect the package manager to remove/replace it...
-
@hgfernan Although I can understand @laurelrusswurm being annoyed if the Trisquel folks didn't bother to announce what was being removed
-
@expatpaul In case of license incompatibility only the removed package can be reinstalled. @laurelrusswurm had it in a previous !Trisquel.
-
@laurelrusswurm The BCM4306 you reference in other dent is supported by free software due to OpenFWWF project - No proprietary stuff needed.
-
@laurelrusswurm Ah, okay... So did you get to the bottom of the problem?
-
@jxself Thanks.
-
@expatpaul got past the roadblock, but not out of the water yet; will wait for onsite support at this point
-
@expatpaul annoyed yes, but not accusing them of things. Do --pretend or equivalent, it will tell you what it's going to do.
-
@laurelrusswurm It seems wireless support for !Linux is excellent nowadays. They have it right in the kernel. It is mac80211, cfg80211 etc.
-
@laurelrusswurm @mvdan @expatpaul Anyway, it looked like a good policy debate. :)
-
@laurelrusswurm Well, good luck
-
@kevingranade Good point. Although @laurelrusswurm did subsequently apologise for maligning Trisquel
-
@hgfernan Yes. That's what I thought
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@hgfernan In most cases, although the Ralink driver in my netbook caused me real problems for a while
-
@expatpaul true, in no way intended to malign @laurelrusswurm, just debating the point.
-
@expatpaul at least twice 0:o
-
@expatpaul Same here for RT2870/3070 in a 2.6.x kernel. It's all fine in a 3.2x kernel. Boy the version numbers are rolling too fast ! :)
-
@hgfernan Perhaps there is too much upgrading before its ready/stable.
-
@laurelrusswurm The 3.2.x series is already stable. But not in most distros. !Trisquel Brigantia uses 3.0 http://ur1.ca/9l78y
-
@mvdan Be free is not built for that tweet, i don't think i need to use arch but my printer only works with deb or rpm distros
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@hgfernan The computer distro "stable" means it will stay mostly the same for a period, not that it works properly.

Decent printer drivers are actually rather scarce.
-
I’ve not had any issues with my hp printer. Maybe I just got lucky…
-
HP's are the only ones that ever worked from what I've seen.
-
Thanks to HPLIP, nearly any HP printer works well.
-
@satipera long time no see! How are you?
-
@laurelrusswurm Ah, I thought that was strange :) AFAIK they can warn you about it, but I don't think they'll do anythi…
-
@x11r5 You are a walking printer and need 100% propietary software :/

They’re the only one’s I’ve had to deal with at least. :)
-
@satipera I've been on vacation for weeks now, so #isitfriday? #didntnotice ;P Ah, student life sucks :)
-
@Mvdan. Not knowing what day it is; is a sign of early onset alzheimer's :)
-
@laurelrusswurm Good point, friend. Stable means it __should__ have less bugs than the __unstable__. Usually true. :)
-
@satipera Who are you now?
-
@satipera or simply a sign of a bad memory :)
-
@Mvdan :) @Laurelrusswurm trying to wind him up.
-
@kevingranade Understood. And your point is a good one
-
@laurelrusswurm For the record, what made me switch from Parabola to !Arch was that #Icecat would include #LibreJS by default.
-
@laurelrusswurm And that's bad because it blocks all nonfree JavaScript - even in free sites, all JS is blocked by a single nonfree JS.
-
@lnxwalt280 Any bets on when the national anthem. Apparently it works the other day i had never heard of any of their albums and a fiddle..
-
@x11r5 Yeah, me neither. I've never heard any of HPLIP's albums and a fiddle.
-
Yes. However, you do realize that most of those are proprietary blobs that -- because it uses Linux-libre -- Trisquel removes, right?
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
I uses free as in freedom software with free hardware and work like a charm. No complications.
-
@lemuriano lucky you :)
-
@jacobwb I agree this is sound as a policy. But certainly it is not very kind to the non-technical user. What do you think ?
-
We're talking about Trisquel. Is it for non-techies? No. It's for people (like me), who actually want to and do make source code changes.
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
Any proprietary software is poison to that kind of user. I'd actually like a proper VRMS running and removing non-free software at all times
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@jacobwb An important point is to actually confirm proprieatary are removed by the installer. I'm gonna install Trisquel to try that. Peace.
