@snapl have you ever thought about 501(c)(3) status for OMC? I have not discussed #NEF with you in the past because I s…
-
OMC is pretty much a vanity thing for me to share music with other folks. Best I've seen is a Suffocation CD from my Amazon wish list. :)
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
To be clear: I never expected to see any money from OMC, nor do I need any to keep it going. I just like playing music for folks to enjoy.
-
so...no? In case it wasn't clear, the reason I ask is because we may eventually be looking for NEF members. It would he…
-
but, the non-political aspect of the 501(c)(3) might not be something you'd like and I would totally understand that.
-
Again, you need to work on your pitch. Outside of our conversations, I have NFC what NEF does, or stands for. Help me help you.
-
Netizen Empowerment Federation. I thought I linked to that on the G+ discussion. We certainly have a page there and an identi.ca group.
-
it might be worth starting at the beginning: http://ur1.ca/9slyd -- we are not at the end yet. I can't say what NEF is…

once we have another group involved we can determine scope. This is why you are having problems understanding what it i…

I mean, I guess we could arbitrarily decide, but @nrlucre and I didn't want to do that. Maybe that's required. I will h…
-
I read that. Outside if giving you something to do for Summer 2012, I have no idea what your purpose or mission is. [cont]
-
...You need to draft up one sentence describing what NEF will accomplish when you're wildly successful. Start with that, and work backward.
-
ok, I'll look at it. I thought the entirely last section had nothing to do with this summer.
-
Again, tell me what you'll be when you're wildly successful, and then work backward on how you'll get there. Right now it's just a mishmash
-
One sentence "NEF is a fiscal sponsor for public interest netcasters and bloggers." I thought we had gotten that far. My apologies.
-
in case you don't know what a fiscal sponsor is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiscal_sponsorship
-
the whole point of filing for Music Manumit instead of NEF is that NEF was going nowhere. I don't know that any of this…
-
OK, now we're getting somewhere. At least I have an idea of what you're looking to accomplish, and why the 501(c)(3) is important.
-
I wouldn't say it's going nowhere; you need to be more clear what it is you're looking to accomplish. Answer "why would I be interested?"
-
is that a question for you specifically, but I'm not sure it's right for you, as we discussed yesterday. That question,…

I was planning on doing a "State of the Union" address at the end of the summer...sorta a debrief, but it's clear somet…
-
Being part of another organization I know some of the pain in getting a 501(c)(3) but up until today I didn't know why you wanted it.
-
The "why would I be interested?" question is something folks will ask about NEF. What are the benefits? Why should I join? [cont]
-
[cont] That's what the NEF needs to explain so people not as familiar with it can learn what the benefits are for them.
-
You don't need a state of the union, you need something to explain to an outsider what they'll get out of it. Something clear / concise.
-
I think I feel like I need to get all of the "insiders" on the same page first. That's what I've been struggling with w…

there is nothing to join. I feel like telling people why they should join is a better idea for after there is something…

Get clear on what you want to accomplish first. The rest will sort itself out later.

I also know from experience with Carolina Open Source Initiative, Carolina Hard Rock Club and even to an extent Madison…
-
And by get clear, I mean get it to the point where you're comfortable telling someone on the street what you're trying to accomplish.
-
I've successfully run organizations in the past by myself and it can work...but as soon as I leave, they die. It's not …
-
You need at least a year to really get an organization started, and another year to get promoted. I wouldn't call it a failure quite yet.
-
unfortunately, I don't have a year. I have a month left of the summer. The idea was that if we had gotten far enough ov…

I thought the kickstarter idea was a good plan b, but it looks like that's going to take longer than a month too. It pr…
-
You have a chicken / egg problem. You're not seeing the interest because few folks know what you're trying to accomplish. Need clarity first
-
Kickstarter is great if you have a clear goal in mind that folks can participate in. "I'm going to make X, and need Y to make it happen".
-
oh, I know there's a chicken/egg problem with the money at the very least.
-
Kickstarter is a terrible tip jar. I think the incentives thread brought that home, though so won't belabor it. :)
-
if I had any money, I would have just gone ahead and filed, but I can't spare anything these days.
-
well, we can easily say "we'll do the podcast for a year" but we'd do the podcast anyway. I mean, we are producing stuf…
-
The chicken/egg problem also applies to involvement: you haven't communicated why people should line up, just told them when and where. :)
-
Right, same with me and OMC. I'd produce the episodes regardless because I feel it's important, and I enjoy doing it. [cont]
-
the only person I have asked to sign up is @mv, that's why there's no central location asking people to do that.
-
[cont] I could try to do a drive with an incentive to put up FLAC files, but it would just cost me time to make that happen.
-
of course, when I started the Lawcast I thought @nrlucre would be more involved, but he got a new job. Ever since that …
-
Regardless of who signed up, you asked for involvement before making it clear what folks were getting involved with. That never works.
-
...and would be pointless unless you got flac originals, which would limit you to BandCamp.
-
how do you know I haven't made it clear to @mv? Have you seen all of our communications?

asking for thoughts on a list of gifts is not asking for involvement in the project further, which is all I did yesterd…
-
I haven't, which is why I had no clue what you were talking about, which started this spiral of a conversation.
-
I wanted to have another "board member" 4 or 5 months ago, which is why I am so frustrated by all of this.
-
The list of gifts needed context. That's what got me wondering what the heck you were doing. No context = no incentive to give.
-
I totally understand that. I wasn't asking people to give yet though. Anyway, it's been helpful to think about realigni…

You'd be surprised what you can get done in a month. Anyway, I hope this has been constructive. If you need a sounding board, contact me. :)

@snapl This is starting to sound like an elevator pitch.
