@johnnynull an intranet within an office or company where it's only staff who are on it, would supply a "safe" social outlet
-
Aside from the fact that I think it’s fun, I have 99.999% uptime. I can still have convos w/people when identica goes down or has issues. ;)
-
And then there is the staple #ownyourdata argument as well when you have your own SN instance. !feds
Pedro Gras likes this. -
That is, if the other people have their own instances.
-
it's fun. my headaches are mostly caused by my own lack of knowledge not by the software.
-
But if you federate, then you can talk to the other feds. It's a chicken and egg thing, I think, and you have the power to break the cycle.
-
no it's not like that. identica may be down but all the other feds can still talk to one another
-
@jpope when it's throwaway conversation type, where is the benefit to owning it? do you look at what you said last week? month? year?
-
@jpope that only holds if it's data that's worthy of being backed up or acrhived, not sure random conversation really applies
-
@jpope if most people aren't federated, they can't read or reply until Identica resumes at which time they see your dents anyway
-
@johnnynull you can up the character limit, but it's annoying for most of your subscribers
-
As time progresses and more people start their instances, there are plenty of non-identica people to talk to at all times. ;)
-
@johnnynull the feds are still up and chatting with each other even when identica is down. you also still can follow bl…
-
Well, that’s an issue with the instance that you are on. StatusNet was designed to be federated.
-
Actually, I’ve searched for conversations that I had on identica a year ago.
-
Well, my instance is set to ‘public’ so that it does federate. You can set it to private and it’ll stay contained within itself.
-
And where's the fun in that?
-
Also, here’s a list federated users that have hit my instances db: http://jpope.org/federatedusers
-
@ratfink I think that the private option would be more suited for businesses or whatnot that wants a contained network for their employees.
-
True. But where's the fun in businesses?
-
@ratfink or a group, party, collective, family with children. Lots of uses for private or community sites.
-
@jpope @johnnynull I know that @mvdan is making a python script that will crawl the web and update a list of public SN sites.
-
But in some cases it could just be run on an intranet and the "private" option ignored. I do see uses for that, now, though.
-
@johnnynull And I’d bet that there are plenty more folks out there, they just haven’t been “seen” by my instance.
-
@parlementum I think @bavatar had started on one some time back. Either way, @mvdan should add a link to http://ur1.ca/…
-
@parlementum @jpope @johnnynull @mvdan I was working on a FoaF crawler a while back, but got distracted with life.
-
@kevingranade He’s going to use a mediawiki extension that will automate updating to a page on Encyclomundi.
-
@jpope I could see a topic-specific group throwing one together, and at some point keeping bots out might be significan…
-
@jpope Haha, you have listed my old instances! Old times :)
-
@mvdan Yep, they are still in the db. ;) For a list of active instances, I’ve got this list: http://jpope.org/receivednoticesbyinstance

@thistleweb @johnnynull My job has a Jabber server running, but we rarely do anything besides direct chat. (there are c…
-
My work is so bought in with M$, we use office communicator. :/
-
@jpope Cool!
-
@jpope same here :( but I think pidgin can communicate with ms communicator - I might try and install that instead of ms thing
-
@jpope yipes, I didn't know they even had an IM/chat solution.
-
@jpope We're pretty bought in to MS for infrastructure too, it's just that the IT dept wasn't consulted about the Jabbe…
-
@kevingranade Yeah, it ties in w/outlook as well. Seems to work alright, kinda hard to jack up a chat application…
-
@kevingranade Ah, gotcha. That’s how I was going to setup an Etherpad on my desktop. ;-)
-
@jpope The "important" people at my employer use it. Replaced a very useful Jabber-based solution with it.
