I can't tell if this is a joke or not.
-
It is kind of cool that it's a bike helmet that appears on your head at the exact moment you think, "OH SHIT I SHOULDA WORN A HELMET AAAAH"

@evan I thought it was a special effects Snow Crash reference
-
@evan by the time you if you have time "you think, "OH SHIT I SHOULDA WORN A HELMET" it is already too late :(
-
So there's this: http://www.hovding.com/
-
@laurelrusswurm watch the movie!
-
@evan Imagine how you could troll people who has one of these -> hand to head -> fluff :)
-
I wonder if "HÖVDING" means "OH SHIT" in Swedish.
-
@evan wow, that's awesome. I like how they have a fashion shot of it inflated. "You'll still look fabulous while bouncing off of cars"
-
@evan bicycle helmets are definitely 'invisible' here (NL) - no one wears them - or needs them - except maybe very small children.
-
@marjoleink My experience biking in NL was a lot of separate trails. I think sharing the road is a much more hazardous experience.
-
Anyway, I thought the whole point of not wearing a helmet was so you didn't look like a bike dork.
-
@marjoleink what makes you think they are unneeded? I'm genuinely curious.
-
@evan also comfort to some degree, but "not looking dorky" probably dominates.
-
@kevingranade to me, it's more important to mitigate the risk of severe head trauma than to avoid looking like a bike dork while biking
-
@kevingranade Simply, cycling is safe here, cyclists are protected. Lots of separate bike paths (not just a line)...
-
@kevingranade also, car drivers take care, because *by law* the 'strongest' party (i.e. not the cyclist or pedestrian) is assumed guilty.
-
@kevingranade seriously, only toddlers on a bike or in a bike seat *may* wear a helmet (most don't), and no one else does.
-
@evan exactly - wherever possible, bike paths are physically separated. And the law protects cyclists and pedestrians...
-
@evan ...in any accident, the 'stronger party' will be assumed guilty - burden of proof upon them to demonstrate otherwise.
-
@marjoleink wow, I was skeptical, but a quick look at some statistics indicates that you're right, good for NL!
-
@kevingranade I figure if I'm sitting on a bike at the time people are going to eventually figure it out
-
@kevingranade Would you share those statistics? I'd liek to see what you looked at :)
-
@marjoleink article summarizing statistics: http://status.linuxwrangling.com/url/5486 Couldn't track down the actual reports since that seems to require dutch.
-
@kevingranade Great, thanks a lot! (& love the header pic with the toddlers (with helmets) starting a race! :D)
-
I like this one: "You’re more likely to die of murder in the US than by cycling in the Netherlands" !!
-
@marjoleink and here is a (depressing, and quite dated) summary of the US biking situation. http://status.linuxwrangling.com/url/5488
-
@marjoleink Also note you're more likely to be murdered in Amsterdam than killed on a bicycle.
-
@kevingranade More interesting stuff - thanks!
-
@marjoleink an interesting statistic, with the US fatalaty/injury rate, the health benefits of regular cycling outweigh the risks by 20/1!
Marjolein Katsma likes this. -
@kevingranade in the UK you're more likely to be killed on a bicycle than by a bee, wasp or hornet....
-
that's measured by impact on life expectancy.
-
Then again, some people manage to get murdered while riding a bicycle... ;)
-
@marjoleink like Theo Van Gogh (in Amsterdam!)
-
Interesting. Did you try clicking "Switch to HTML5 Player"?
-
Not aware such an option existed... where does one find such a thing? Searching "switch" on the link you gave didn't reveal anything
-
Yup
-
For me comfort and so drivers think I'm crazy and I remember I am (reduce risk of risk compensation for both).
-
@mlinksva I read a study evaluating factors influencing distance drivers gave to cyclers, only major correlation was with "being wobbly" :)
-
Human drivers should be banned as rapidly as possible! http://gondwanaland.com/mlog/2012/04/28/ban-human-drivers/
-
@evan S'okay, now that I know it exists I can ask at tonight's #UbuntuHour in #Waterloo http://identi.ca/notice/96053779 !WRAwesome !ubuntu
-
http://www.bath.ac.uk/news/articles/releases/overtaking110906.html claims no helmet and long hair obtains more room, but a one rat study.
-
@laurelrusswurm you enjoying Ubuntu hour?
-
@mlinksva absolutely: [Forbes] http://status.linuxwrangling.com/url/5492
-
@mlinksva sweet, I have long hair :) #blowinginthewind
-
@lstenxch Yes :) but old venue not working...place had 1 outlet in room booked; in spite of month old reservation gave to bigger group twice
-
@evan This is my favorite bike helmet: http://tmblr.co/ZMDc9xRTnSwo
-
It's in a little bar of actions ("Follow", "Add to", "Stats") under the description, on the far right.
-
@laurelrusswurm Not cool do you have a new location now?
-
@lstench yes, its an egyptian restaurant which is both accessible and has alternative foods re: allergies...will see if has wifi or power :)
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@evan not for me http://identi.ca/attachment/73184338
-
Interesting. Is that Firefox?
-
@laurelrusswurm You just said that to make me smile:D. It is Egyptian so it must correct!
-
@evan Yes. I have turned off No-Script, and I'm not signed in. It's been suggested that the HTML5 button might be a flash blob :o
-
@lstench Our fearless !Ubuntuca leader @flyingsquirrel chose the venue, but I thought you'd like it :)
-
The sheer number of bicycles on the road here (especially within cities), means cars expect cyclists to be all around them all the time :)
-
@laurelrusswurm well @flyingsquirrel must be pretty smart.. Def. leadership abilities. I am easy to figure out :/
-
@evan, some people apparently avoid helmets for #safety reasons: http://mimiandeunice.com/2010/09/07/helmet/
-
@evan Hövding literally means “headling”, as in the head/chief of a clan or tribe. So it’s a rather cute pun.
