Wow,attorneys are announcing publicly on FLOSS Foundations list that they'll sue me for libel if ever I say their clients are violating !GPL
about 5 months ago from web- Evan Prodromou, Rob Myers and Stephen Michael Kellat and 4 others like this.
- nds, laurelrusswurm and James Robertson and 3 others repeated this.
-
seems like a pretty extreme strategy. But maybe that is a good sign if corps view allegations of GPL violations as harmful to their image

@bkuhn They must think that non-compliance with the GPL is worth more than just monatary damage. There's reputational damage too.
Stephen Michael Kellat and Hilton Garcia Fernandes like this. -
@bkuhn I'm sure you'll remind them that libel involves making a statement which is untrue.
Stephen Michael Kellat and Hilton Garcia Fernandes like this. -
That statement is constructed from partial information. Only 2 two attorneys are involved & they were reacting to an accusation.
Stephen Michael Kellat and Hilton Garcia Fernandes like this. -
Commonly named “threats” ; I think threats are commonly illegal, too. ;)

@webmink, actually, *no* accusations had been made; I just pointed that out as well. But indeed only 1 attorney brought up "libel".
Stephen Michael Kellat and Hilton Garcia Fernandes like this. -
@balor, indeed, this is why "going public" naming !GPL violators is aggressive strategy only to be used as a penultimate resort, IMO.

@postblue,eh,I get threats nearly every month re: !GPL enforcement. A lot of ppl want it to end & pursue aggressive strategies to stop it.

If we were free to disclose the name involved I suspect many would be less surprised, too.
Stephen Michael Kellat and Hilton Garcia Fernandes like this. -
@webmink, actually we *can* disclose names. (I wonder if you think FLOSS Foundations has #CHR; it doesn't) But I see no reason to name names
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
Hence I suggest your original statement could be classified as hyperbole...
Stephen Michael Kellat and Hilton Garcia Fernandes like this. -
I'll agree w/ you on that. My original statement here was indeed hyperbole, inspired by how flabbergasted I was by what seemed like a threat
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
I always treat it as CHR even though it is possible to find public archives.
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
You're in good company if that's any comfort.
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@webmink now you're driving me to search engine :)
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
Let me know if you find search engine hits; there shouldn't really be any...
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@webmink I'm not having any luck so far
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
I'm actually relieved :-)
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@bkuhn more than one attorney?
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@fontana I have a vague recollection of him being unambiguous wrt. being plural on a faif episode. I can go through and check.
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@webmink, do you have an independent research to understand what CHR means for non-time-boxed, electronically archived discussions?
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@webmink, wait, I'm in good company being flabbergasted, or using hyperbole, or both? If you mean re: flabbergasted, yes, it's some comfort.
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@fontana, No, I addressed that later in the thread. Plural was in error. Only one attorney said "libel". He seems to have retracted it.

Joplin once said: "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to loose". I've got nothing but a big mouth, just sayin…
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
No; I just treat it instinctively.

Something else to discuss over that beer at FOSDEM I think :-)
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
So strange that anyone expects Free Software licenses to go unenforced.
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@evan Perhaps because some don't think freedom is worth fighting for
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
Assume a silent 'always' or it's the least strange expectation ever.
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@webmink, you keep saying that, but I think you forget that I don't drink beer at all. :)
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@evan, I don't think anyone expects that, but opponents of copyleft have realized ∃ just a few squeeze points to thrwart !GPL enforcement.
Hilton Garcia Fernandes likes this. -
@bkuhn I will drink your beer for you.
Hilton Garcia Fernandes and nds like this. -
@bkuhn so they think violating the GPL is a very bad action then. ;)
-
@mlinksva indeed
-
Can someone expand the abbreviation #CHR ?
-
#CHR is designed for time-boxed in-person meetings: ur1.ca/9ija2 I think its application to mailing list communication is highly complex.
-
Thx @bkuhn! #CHR==Chatham House Rule; meeting where ppl are free to use info presented, but keep names&orgs confidential http://ur1.ca/9ija2
