http://ur1.ca/ck6i4 is the stupidest idea I've seen all day. Passive, disrespectful, and sends the wrong message. #InternetFreedomDay

@evan agree mostly, but why is it disrespectful? To whom?
-
http://ur1.ca/ck6ir Is the family of MLK *really* the Big Bad right now? A threat to Internet freedom? #InternetFreedomDay
-
To Martin Luther King and his family.
-
@evan rhetoric aside (by FftF), sharing that speech doesn't seem disrespecful, opposite in fact.
-
@evan I differentiate between unlawful and disrespectful (one is not always the other, see plagiarism and (C) infringement).

May also be an opportunity to show there's shared oppression, eg the documentary about MLK held back by copyright on "Happy Birthday"
-
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A14801-2005Jan16.html Article about that
-
@greg making MLK's family the bad guy is disrespectful.
-
@cwebber is that a fair comparison? Really?
-
@evan is it not a fair comparison? I think MLK's family is not the bad guy, and I think the statement I made tried to avoid saying such?
-
@evan That said, I agree that there is risk of misinterpretation of intended message, so it may be a bad idea with the right intentions.
-
@cwebber Fight to distribute copyrighted works against the creator's wishes feels less important than the fight for basic civil rights.

@evan It's often a mistake to blame copyright holders because they live in a culture where copyright is seen as required
-
@cwebber is think there are some interesting questions but too esoteric to make the cornerstone of a big pr push.
-
@Reality Careful or people will start saying you are thoughtful.
-
@satipera Eh?
-
Didn't say fight for civil rights morally equiv to (C) battles, I pointed out two instances of (C) blocking distributing MLK's message.

I originally thought that's what you meant, making copyright fights equivalent of civil right fights in significance, and I agreed
-
Then the issue turned to the violation of the copyright itself; that's where I disagreed.
-
@evan cringey PR, lots of interesting questions. eg yr ago identi.ca/conversation/88038853 and gondwanaland.com/mlog/2012/01/16/mlk-remix/
-
The problem is not to accept there being mutually exclusive belief systems; it's how to perpetuate conversation between groups holding them.
-
@simsa0 Of course.
-
w/ mutually exclusive belief systems, the other will count as "strange" or "irrational". How to perpetuate conversations here?
-
"Differences in opinions are only possible given a huge set of shared opinions" (Donald Davidson) Otherwise it would be incomprehension.
-
@simsa0 Difficult given this one hits so closely. The opinion really doesn't matter once the end is passed
-
Gotcha!
-
BTW, fear that MLK's family will be mistakenly made into the bad guy seems to be well founded: http://ur1.ca/cknq4
-
http://ur1.ca/cknqb I left a response, which has a lot of mirrors to http://ur1.ca/1 conversation.
-
@cwebber MLK family does have a history of keeping tight reins on his legacy. There efforts even helped steer GA's right of publicity laws.
-
I will admit that I am totally uninformed on that topic.
