@dillj: So far osmand is looking best. I also tried navit, it works but the map rendering is not pretty. Small downloads though - vectors

@johnnynull I've had a Droid and a Droid X, I've been happy with both. Owned two dumbphones from Motorola in the past, they were terrible.
