@dachte Is this not a case where your decision that some concerns are not important is giving you false positives on PC-ness?
-
@dachte To recap, first you said "All PC." Then I showed you several reasons not related to PC. Then you said they were all immaterial.
-
@dachte It's a legitimate response, whether or not you approve, to a substantive problem. Not about "not risking offending others".
-
@dachte To say it again, one solution to abuse of fans at sports games is to change the nickname. That might not be ideal. But so what?
-
@dachte I wonder how you could explain that to the affected students. "Sorry, but we're looking for the PERFECT answer. So, tough luck."
-
@dachte As long as UND uses its name where the NCAA isn't connected, there is no problem. After all, why would they care?
-
@dachte We're looking for solutions, not who to blame. You can have a different preferred solution if you like, but that's off-topic.
-
@dachte In no way does verbal abuse of fans at sporting events in any way resemble your standard of PC. Can we abandon the PC straw man now?
-
@dachte Some fans (mostly opposing fans) have created, from time to time, a horrible atmosphere for the Native American fans.
-
@dachte One other thing. A complaint about the nickname was that it led to problems for Native American fans at UND sporting events.
-
@dachte But if you do, I don't have to play chess with you, and I don't have to coauthor a paper where my name appears with yours.
-
@dachte Suppose you want to be called "Dachte the Amazing King of the World". You can ask that. You can call yourself that. Good for you.
-
@dachte It seems absurd to make this analogy, because it should be so obvious, but here we go ...
-
@dachte There is no "suddenly" here. The NCAA and UND talked about this for years. Many other schools changed nicknames long ago.
-
@dachte Whether this issue is actionable is the underlying question. It seems premature for you to assert your conclusion as a premise.
-
@dachte The NCAA was maybe willing to make a deal along the lines of UND not using the nickname for sporting-related stuff. UND refused.
-
@dachte So if there have been problems for decades, it's too late, just cope? And because people were well-intentioned, it's OK?
-
@dachte It's "common sense", you think? Others disagree. Isn't this precisely a discussion about what is sensible?
-
@dachte If you're trying to argue that others have to call you by *whatever* nickname you choose, I think you're wasting time.
-
@dachte 1. So you've abandoned your standard, then? 2. Nicknaming oneself *is* picking a fight if you choose a nickname others dislike.
