Have you tried to force gnus to use openssl? (It can be done, but I don't remember how...)

Interesting. I didn't test my setup from Gnus because I don't use this dovecot server (I run it for a friend..)

So what went wrong in your case? I more or less just had to reconfigure dovecot in dovecot.local or something and the everything was back...
