I don't think it makes sense to have HTTPS by default for new StatusNet installs, since there's the extra step of getting a cert.

StatusNet 1.x supports HSTS, too.

All StatusNet versions have supported 100% HTTPS for quite a while. You should be able to install and set it up yourself.
