That doesn't sound right, even my Pandaboard doesn't have that sort of issue. Are you using unity-2d? Dual core atoms should be all right.

@qwc,@ml2mst: In general, completely uninstall nvidia's driver and install nvidia-current from Ubuntu main, and see if that works.
