Frank Zappa of Free Software

Bradley M. Kuhn at

I heard someone quote Frank Zappa on Radiolab this morning. I hadn't heard the quote before, and it reminded me of my current view about Free Software. Frank Zappa apparently said: “Jazz isn't dead; it just smells funny”.

I'm also reminded of Terry Gross saying one of the toughest questions she ever asked a guest is asking Frank Zappa whether he liked rock'n'roll or merely had contempt for it.

I always kinda wanted to be the George Bailey of Free Software, but fact is, I'll probably be remembered more as the Frank Zappa of Free Software [0]. Either one is probably ok with me.

[0] Fortunately, no one will ever call me the James Bond of Free Software. That nickname would be embarrassing.

Writing about  yourself "being remembered" and "as Zappa" in the same sentence is an oxymoron, Bradley.

@hugoroy I cannot help but see a certain physical resemblance between you and Mr. Zappa
