The thread is officially cut. GChat, and its link to the xmpp / jabber world, is gone.
Turns out I'm wrong! XMPP still works, but GChat, as a client, is gone. Pidgin users can still connect, etc.
I can still talk to my contacts on Google's server who haven't "upgraded" to Hangouts, which is a bit surprising. Not going to count on it continuing to work though.

“I can still talk to my contacts on Google's server who haven't "upgraded" to Hangouts,
is it from another xmpp server or just connecting to your gtalk account with an xmpp client?
I believe I've read somewhere that the latter will still work (for a while?), but I can't find it anymore.
anyway, I've convinced at least some of the people I communicated with via gtalk to migrate to proper xmpp, which is a start.

This is from my XMPP server. I'm still working on getting my contacts to switch.
