Honestly, I'm still looking for an RSS-to-email script that isn't a disaster. I've tried a few different ones to no avail. Karl, I'm surprised you don't use something Emacs-based, actually.
FWIW, I tried Gnus to directly read RSS, but its offline ability was quite limited.
Wanderlust has a very decent rss/news scrapper module. It is called Shinbun (Japanese for newspaper).
It is also the best imap client out there that I know of.

Perfectly reasonable question. The answer is "insider information" -- I knew that it was going to be open sourced, or that this was highly likely, and even talked through licensing options and a few other things with its developer (whom I know). I've updated the original blog post to clarify this.
