My previous approach to initialising Flycheck was playing havoc with remote files. Glad to learn that the recommended(add-hook 'after-init-hook #'global-flycheck-mode) automatically prevents checking of remote files (via TRAMP). and I'd been meaning to do this exclusion manually for a while.
