How to open xmpp URL?

There is a specification for xmpp URLs and there are instructions how to configure browsers to handle those URLs. I'm trying to get Iceweasel (Firefox) to open xmpp url using Gajim, but without success.
gajim-remote handle_uri works fine when I run it on command line. That firefox setting doesn't work. I don't know if those instructions are outdated.
Are there better instructions? Does it work with other browers?
It seems that Iceweasel ignores its own settings for protocol handlers and uses environments settings. XMPP URL handler should be defined for Gnome, and then it works with other browsers too.
