I disagree. Email servers are super complicated. Getting them to run the way you want requires a great deal of knowledge and experience. Too many hard-to-understand issues show up. Inexperienced sysadmins who would most benefit from a prepackaged solution should keep their distance. Start off with a web server or a Pump server, and in a few years (or never) think about whether you wanna self-host email. :-)

The problem I have had with self-hosting email is that large organisations do not trust my email address because my server doesn't resolve to the domain name when you do a DNS reverse lookup. Apart from that I can't complain because it puts me in more control of my inbox. If you are a programmer like myself it doesn't matter too much if you host your own email server or not. What matters is how you handle the email.
