@Mike Linksvayer , I don't deny that I'm taking a political position here. I think a key difference is, given that I'm opposed to the "money == speech" argument, that these trade assocations are incredibly well funded and have bought many of the microphones in our community for raising issues.

Meanwhile, the problem with, for example, OIN, is that they are widely supported and have hired people from the community to promote them. I heard OIN described as a "non-profit that fights software patents" just yesterday at a conference. It's a for-profit company! That's the kind of confusion only well spent politicking dollars can buy!
