Why is IRS working in a partnership with private industry rather than providing its own software free > to the public?

Private industry, with established expertise and experience in electronic tax preparation, has a proven track record in providing the best technology and services available.

I won't use something that requires me to give my information to some private LLC to get my taxes done.

But, more than that, I grabbed the main page, and got a "No Javascript" message. My first check of a javascript file found at the Free File Alliance website yielded this file, which is proprietary software.

I will file on paper yet again.

What I truly don't get: Ok, so the IRS can't handle true e-file themselves and after the Health-Care situation just confirms that.

But, they really can't handle just the ability to upload PDFs of your taxes?
