Suddenly I'm worried about burning so much carbon that our atmosphere just disappears!

But I guess we'd die of climate change first?

@cwebber@identi.ca Putting up as much C02 as Venus has would require boiling off our entire ocean volume from the planet. It would be hard to achieve a Venus-like earth without that. I would not worry about that. But we also know that C02 is such a good heat-lever that event modest (tens of parts per million) increases have measurable effects on earth over a decade or so. We have seen that clearly. Every extra hundred parts per million is a 1-2 degree step closer to Venus. Venus is hot enough to melt lead at its surface. We are far from that. But extinctions have been generated in the geologic record by warmings comparable to or smaller than what we have already achieved.

Whew! I'm glad we might put ourselves to extinction by one of those other routes instead. ;)
