I started off my career in the Google datacenters, in one of the first "megadatacenter" deployments in the world, about 10 years ago. It greatly shaped my view of things.

Anyone who thinks "cloud computing is green" ought to spend a few years working in one of these things. The environmental impact of server-side computing has just been moved out of most peoples' view. I'm sure the amount of computing that happened because of the rise of server side computing has only increased the amount of energy blown dramatically. People almost certainly haven't been spending less power on computing locally over the last decade, now there's just a large local and remote resource expense.
