Hung out with my childhood best friend this weekend for the first time in three years, saw his kid for the first time. They're all huge Star Trek nerds so that flavored the weekend... Morgan crocheted her a klingon hat that was amazing and had the ridges and hair and everything, and the kid barely understood it but loved to wear it anyway. The kid is one and a half and is sharper than most three year olds I've met (can spell and read several words, seems to make really smart associations, hums the star trek theme song... I was impressed). Glad to see my friends seem to be such excellent parents and seem happy about it, even if perpetually exhausted.

We also watched Princess Bride and played a Star Trek themed session of Fate. I was nervous about running that because my friend never played an RPG before but also because I wanted the session to feel like Star Trek, which means less shooting phasers and more social conflicts with an overtone of humanist ethics. Happily we achieved that I think... it felt like a pretty decent TNG episode. Seems I've got another convert... he just bought dice for him and his family and is already planning out games to run with his kid as soon as she's able to comprehend dice rolls, it seems.

It was really good. I hope something like that happens again sooner than three years apart next time, especially since we only live an hour and a half away. Busy lives...

A nice break; now back to MediaGoblin... something exciting happens tomorrow!

I like your definition of "Star Trek".
