Panic'ed a bit when GDM wouldn't start after booting from the airport. Rebooting helped.

I don't remember how to start wifi from the command line anymore so that could have been catostrophic.

Doesn't network manager have a CLI interface these days? That might be the easiest way...

It does, but it's just a rather thin layer over the d-bus API from what I remember. A really good (bad?) example of how UX and ID principles still apply in a text based world

I never rely on graphic utilities to have fundamental services like networking one. So, no NetworkManager: wpasupplicant+wpacli/wpagui+/etc/network/interfaces, it works like a charm, and you can always work from the command line without any graphic desktop and without d-bus.
