Some of my favorite writers make use of contained story universes. Isaac Asimov was great at this; his robot stories often took place with recurring characters through different periods of history. When done well, a writer can create an elaborate story universe that deals with different causes and effects. You could illustrate an entire culture with its own technology, rules, and conventions this way.
