@dper: Checking the box does not increase your tax or decrease your refund.
@greg: You'll come to your own conclusion, I hope. I am not convinced that the amount of taxpayer support given to campaigns is enough to displace what lobbyists give (and therefore reduce lobbyists' impact on public policy).

Which means it actually decreases the amount of money the government can spend on anything else.
But yeah, the amount they get is so small it doesn't make a difference. But then you could argue for http://letsfreecongress.org/ I suppose.
