Also when you get past the 1st bit, it's a very good article about things we should all think about.

But Joeyh, _why, Thoreau, Emerson, Knuth, Plato and Nietzsche?! At least one of these things is not like the others.

I think there are good arguments to compare writing code to writing poetry, and with that Plato is the odd one out.

I have to admit that for me Emerson was the odd one out, because I'd heard of the others. But now that I've learned that Emerson mentored Thoreau, I'd say _why is the odd one out, because the others still have relevance.

I don't think people learn Ruby through chunky bacon anymore, and any software _why wrote has been replaced by other things, partly because Ruby is moving fast, and partly because of the disruptive way he retired from the scene. He is an obscure subcultural historical phenomenon, nothing more.

People use git-annex and d-i, people write Sci-Fi based on Thoreau's and Emerson's ideas, Knuth is quoted every day and we are still hoping he will finish Volume 4. Every philosophy student knows Plato and Nietzsche.
