Economies in Minetest

Mark Holmquist at

So I was standing at my laptop playing Minetest, and thinking of how I could make it a little more incremental and a little less tedious to get resources. Eventually, strip mining gets a little weird.

I think I may wind up writing an investment mod.

There's a few currency mods, but I'm not looking to use those. I want to give people a way to invest resources in various communities focused on different types of exports, then calculate returns on investment based on existing values in the system like ore frequency, speed of mining, speed of tree and other crop growth, and so on.

I'd have to slightly cripple the growth rate, and probably add in random events like raids or droughts, but I think it could make the game a lot more interesting.

Thoughts?

Gold is the most useless element!!!

I think more like...diamond and iron mining. Coal is trivial to get and would basically just be a side effect of any other mining.
