In case it needs clarification, there are software services that I think do warrant the "run it yourself" approach (or close to it). Long-form blogging, image publishing, and commerce are the most obvious.

I would not want to see a single-digit number of MediaGoblin providers consume the bulk of the Internet's media-serving duties, for example.

Mostly, I think, because this type of content is broadcast-like; one-to-many at the very least. So you do want, as the creator, to have essential control. But microblogging and instant messaging, like email, are "conversation" platforms and that, IMO, is why "everyone build your own" doesn't fit.
