
I never use the Markdown mode; I don't care for Markdown.
But, indeed, the ? is erroneous. Generally if the unicode char comes through but the font in use on the client side doesn't include a glyph for it, you get the "empty box" glyph. The question mark indicates that the character itself got axed somewhere earlier in the process.
