I don't give much faith to journalists using the correct terminology, especially when the "wrong" word/phrase has a good ring to it. I think "hacker" is a perfect example. I'm not sure I've ever heard it used in typical media without the negative connotation.

The first time I heard the term "darknet", it actually referred to hosts that were on public IP addresses, but due to routing problems were not reachable from every other public IP number on the net, or it referred to publically allocated IP addresses that were actually used in publically inaccessible intranets. (my previous employer is one of the guilty, although only for a handful of addresses, not whole A-blocks like some really early adopters)
