Yeah: when you are coasting, you are using fuel to keep the engine turning. When in gear and moving, the momentum does it.

With an automatic, though, that has slipping in the transmission, I'm not entirely seeing how that could be true.

I can see it being true in a manual transmission, where the wheels are connected directly to the engine camshafts.
