Either of those could’ve been pushed or strongly hinted at from above.  Making waves on national TV in any way would’ve brought up problems whether civilian or military.  To quote 5 CFR 735.203 in pertinent part: “ An employee shall not engage in criminal, infamous, dishonest, immoral, or notoriously disgraceful conduct, or other conduct prejudicial to the  Government.”

That he’s being packed off to war college means his career will actually advance.
