UOS-1411 Day 1

These day-in-review posts will eventually go on the blog that is aggregated by planet.ubuntu.com. Until then, they're posted here...

The first rule is don't volunteer. Well, I broke that during Day 1 of Ubuntu Online Summit 1411.

My first session booked was the opening plenary. I got to it late. Rick Spencer gave the keynote to kick off proceedings.

Up next was the first Community Roundtable of this Ubuntu Online Summit. For this session I participated via IRC-only. Much of the structure of the Community track was laid out for the rest of the summit.

Not many events are directly relevant to what I do in the community. For example, the format of Ubuntu Online Summit doesn't fit the flow for Xubuntu so that flavor does not sponsor sessions at the event though team members may be participating in sessions. The schedule can also be somewhat fluid. With the roundtable done, I attended to errands in the community before my next session.

My last session for the day was Community events in Vivid cycle. I participated in this one voice-only. Daniel Holbach, David Planella, and I tried to hammer out some scheduling for Ubuntu Global Jam. After much discussion, we added several "work items" to the session blueprint. Items include:

[dholbach] To write to loco-contacts@lists.ubuntu.com to discuss UGJ dates and solicit feedback about interest in activities. Copy to fridge.ubuntu.com and social media outlets as appropriate: TODO
[dholbach] Write blog entry calling for "onboarding" videos for YouTube: TODO
[dholbach] set up survey for tuition session: TODO
[ubuntu-lococouncil] Develop in concert with Canonical Community Team appropriate feedback mechanism and measurements tools for assessment of UGJ: TODO
[ubuntu-lococouncil] Assess the state of social media usage by LoCo Teams and look at developing best practices.: TODO
[ubuntu-lococouncil] Develop review of question: How do we "follow the zeitgeist" in terms of maximizing use of social networks in approaching users: TODO
[ubuntu-lococouncil] Develop plan for AskUbuntu Patrol game/project/exercise including challenge coins for UGJ 1 to 2 during 15.04 cycle: TODO
[ubuntu-lococouncil] Cooperate with Canonical Community Team in developing developing AskUbuntu documentation for Patrol game/project/exercise: TODO

We don't know until the release schedule for Vivid Vervet is actually hammered out when Ubuntu Global Jam will take place. We may make it into two sessions. One proposal that will need to be developed if we do the two sessions states:

AskUbuntu Patrol: Activity for our LoCo Teams to spend time together at least once per week answering questions and cleaning up tagging. By cycle's end, "challenge coins" could be designed and presented to members of communities who participated. SEE: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Challenge_coin&oldid=623329004

On the agenda for Thursday:

And the last two are double-booked in the same time slot now! I should be done by 1700 UTC, though. There was a session on MATE I was going to attend but I'm dropping that now. LoCo Council and Xubuntu are enough to keep one busy in this realm.
