"You have the option to unlist/decline/etc." is the fig-leaf that companies use to cover up their ever increasing appetites for everyone's information. The spying by default model serves them very well. Most people are unaware of the many ways in which their privacy can be compromised, let alone that there's ongoing development of new ways.
We accept that our information belongs to the entities that collect it. We also accept that they can use and share it as they choose, except in the specific ways that we request them to restrict its use. Because we are allowed to make these requests, our consent to the use and sharing of our info is assumed in the absence of such a request. Privacy is not a primary concern in this status quo.
