Yeah, with merging and version control tools being build for plain text files, I heard a similar argument from Greg Wilson chatting after PyCon last year, but in relation to office documents rather than free culture. We haven't even expanded version control / merging tools that work well in plain text to be able to handle Open/MS document files (the kind of text documents that non-programmers use). These tools could be super relevant and useful beyond programming if they weren't solely focused on plain text.

Thanks for mentioning Greg Wilson and in particular his site, http://third-bit.com/ . Haven't heard of him before and love what he's writing there. Already spotted two LeGuin references, even. :-)

Yeah, Greg Wilson was a great software engineering prof. at U of T when I took the course with him back in ~2008, and he's doing some interesting work at Software Carpentry now! Definitely an interesting guy.
