@Diane Trout I agree re: blocking parasitic activity is difficult. It's something I'm spending more time thinking about and doing research into, but I don't know enough to recommend actual solutions.
btw I am interested in these kinds of distributed collaborative filtering approaches, but it would require work to "prove" it as a useful approach...

I can see how that distributed filter would work nicely for recommending posts and content to other users.
Though if you can manage the community validation step listed at the end of that paper, that's probably sufficient to help control email spam.
That's probably why the big email companies just trust each other. They're run by people and people can only manage ad-hoc relationships with a few hundred other people.
