I only got it to run in qemu and got to the terminal. I wasn't rally expecting gnome3 to pop up and "apt-get install gnome" would have been close to all i could do at that moment.

Yes. They provide Gnome. http://savannah.gnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=8491
I don't know what sorcery allowed them to avoid needing systemd but the guix team pulled it off.
I peeked at the dev list recently and it looks like there might be progress on KDE too.
