Global Politics

I try to avoid posting political opinion but when something is clearly wrong, I feel compelled to.

Trump just admitted via a Tweet that the tariffs against Canada are in retaliation for their treatment of American dairy. (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1005586562959093760)

I feel these words need to be preserved in case the Tweet is deleted:

PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, “US Tariffs were kind of insulting” and he “will not be pushed around.” Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!

‎But wait, weren't these tariffs supposedly justified by national security concerns as per section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/need-know-section-232-investigations-tariffs/)?

Furthermore, if the WTO was involved, they could have argued thusly under article 21 of GATT (https://www.wto.org/english/res_e/booksp_e/gatt_ai_e/art21_e.pdf).‎

However, with this latest Tweet, it's become crystal clear that these tariffs against Canada (and probably others) are not about national security but rather part of the game Trump is playing.

Unfortunately for Trump, these are illegal under American and global regulations and Canada (and probably others) have a very strong case for the WTO.

I really hope the American checks and balance system kicks in and one of the other branches reverses the illegal executive order before the WTO gets involved.

I hate seeing Trump playing games at the expense of American and global citizens. No one is winning.‎

McClane, McClane shared this.

Also, one more example of how global (and local...) politics are done VIA TWITTER...

Sad, sad humanity.
