Lingering Culture Shock
David Chung at
Despite recently becoming American, there are still a few lingering culture shock for me:
- I still can't imagine miles. I can picture in my head 100m and so increments of 100m makes sense to me: 500m, 1km, 2km, etc. However, I can't picture what fractions of a mile mean: 1/4 mi, 1/2 mi, 1mi, etc. makes no sense to me and I end up preparing to exit much sooner than I normally would because of this.
- Gun culture. Fortunately, the concept of buying guns to protect yourself is not really a thing in Hawaii and Hawaiian culture is much more communal than on the mainland, which is why I feel comfortable here.
- And more recently, the concept that a failure to pass funding bills does not dissolve the legislative branch of government and trigger an election.
