Thunderbird/IceDove is super-memory hungry. 2 GB is low for "these days," but still... should be possible to function well under these conditions.

For low-memory machines. I actually prefer an open webmail client like RoundCube. If I have to run a browser, it might as well do more work for me on a low-memory machine.
