I've always liked this quote by Ben Franklin, made at the signing of the Declaration of Independence:

We must, indeed, all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.

Sad to say, apparently it's unsourced, and had been attributed to a number of other people before Franklin.

It makes me think a lot about the federated social web. Small social networks are very vulnerable; we need each other to survive.
