  • Hello again!

It's nice to see pump.io in active development again, but there seem to be much less people here than there used to be couple of years ago.

    Show all 5 replies

    Haha, well said.

I rarely have anything interesting to share, so I usually disappear from all social networks for extended periods of time.

Also, last I was here, there hadn't been any pump.io development for about 9 months, so I was mainly just commenting on what has changed since I was last here :P

“[...] I rarely have anything interesting to share, so [...]”

Oh, but you can contribute a lot just by commenting on posts or sharing them =)

Development of the Pump.io core picked up pace over a year ago. Other parts never stopped, actually.

We're actually on the way to adopting the new ActivityPub standard, which will be adopted by other federated networks too. That will allow Pump.io to interfederate with those other players in a big network.

That'll be nice. As I like the feature-set of pump.io, but find diaspora*'s web client to be most polished, while I primarily use GNU Social, as that's the community I know best :)

    >> Aqeel Zafar:

“[...] but find diaspora*'s web client to be most polished, [...]”

Well, it should be, since it's the only client they have xD

BTW, re: the number of people, as usual, it depends on who you follow. People you follow might have gone away, but there might be many new users you're not following. You'll see them around in other people's posts if you actually use this a little =)

  • Pump.io Development

2015-03-12T11:47:20Z via Pumpa To: Public CC: Followers

There hasn't been any commit on Pump.io's github repo for about 9 months, has the development repo moved somewhere else or is the development going through a period of hibernation?

Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠), Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) shared this.

hibernation, probably. last I heard the master branch was unstable as @Evan Prodromou was converting it to coffeescript.

He's maybe been busy with other things that have taken priority? I dunno.

    jrobb at 2015-03-12T11:59:00Z

I think Evan is busy trying to earn a living and keep his hosted pumps running. I know he does what he can when he can.

2015-02-28T10:14:35Z via Pumpa To: Public CC: Followers

Just found out about #theDress after dropbox on twitter posted something about it. I considered it a complete hoax, except me and my wife can't agree on colour either. I think it's blue and black, she thinks it's white and gold. A huge example of how same things can be percieved differently by different people.

(If you don't know what I am talking about, check https://www.yahoo.com/health/is-this-dress-blue-and-black-or-white-and-gold-112194158507.html )

I had no idea what people were talking about. Since I'm trying to reduce the number of meaningless distractions, I hadn't bothered to try to track it down.

I see white and gold here.

    lnxwalt@microca.st at 2015-03-01T21:32:53Z

I only looked it up, because I thought it was some new feature by Dropbox and wanted to know what it was and when will it be available in Linux version :P

Why are there no more desktop assisstant like Prody Parrot and Bonzi Buddy anymore? I used to love those programs.

Someone needs to develop one of those.

    Usman Bashir likes this.

Oh, that brings back memories! I and my kid brother used to love Bonzi. :)

Though, I didn't know it was a spyware app back then.

    Usman Bashir at 2015-02-24T02:39:18Z

    You're alive!

And yeah, just found out that it used to be a spyware, but other than that, it was pretty fun!

    Aqeel Zafar at 2015-02-24T08:13:00Z

No, I'm just writing to you from the great beyond. :p

All kidding aside, I kinda went off from federated social networks like identica, rstatus and diaspora a few years ago. And, I'm not sure, if I'm still back.

Though, you seem to be still kicking around. :D

Btw, I think you could call Siri and Cortana the new age assistants. It's just so happens they are on our mobile devices now and a lot smarter then the desktop agents of yesteryears.

    Usman Bashir at 2015-02-25T10:56:54Z

They aren't on desktop, can't understand 90% of what I say, and most importantly not cute and cuddly looking! :)

  • Howto reduce disk I/O?

2015-02-08T16:33:24Z via Pumpa To: Public CC: Followers

How can I reduce disk io on an arch server? Any suggestions / pointers?

I imagine you could add more RAM, so more stuff can get cached. Also, if the server is using the swap memory, you could play with the swappiness configuration to make it use it less.

Pumpa is giving me SSL errors for identi.ca, says the certificate has expired. It was working fine yesterday.

Also, no such error on web.
Can't find a way to edit the original post, but it seems identi.ca's SSL certificate actually *is* expiring today. 3rd Feb 2015.

For a webapp, that should be installable on shared hosting, does it make any sense to go with anything other than PHP?

Also, how important is "should be installable on shared hosting" in general these days?

2014-12-10T10:35:10Z via Pumpa To: Public CC: Followers

Selling an old laptop, how can I format the hard drive in linux so that data isn't recoverable?

It has windows installed on it, would converting the drive to ext4 and then back to fat32/ntfs good enough?

Found https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Securely_wipe_disk, should've known Arch Wiki has everything! :)

    Aqeel Zafar at 2014-12-10T10:37:46Z

    jpope, jrobb likes this.

Reformatting will not make data unrecoverable at all because mkfs only rewrites the FS table (very beginning of the partition).
Even dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda will not make data completely unrecoverable.
    Try dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda

    XRevan86 at 2014-12-10T10:57:03Z

@Aqeel Zafar, … or just read ArchWiki :-).

    XRevan86 at 2014-12-10T10:58:14Z

I usually use DBAN, followed by a sledgehammer.

Even after wiping the drive, I'm never quite sure, so I destroy it as much as possible.
