Just an update on this:

so far 26+ hours of use on the Dollar store 9V battery and the battery is only down to 7.5V

Headphones need only 3.3V to run So I'm probably golden for at least another 26hr

Next run will be done with a rechargable 9V but looks like given my normal usage patterns I'll only need to recharge once every month or two.
