But that doesn't address some people's needs to run apps that don't work on shared hosts (for example, the presumed direction that MediaWiki is taking by "requiring" (in scare quotes) a SOA setup). I have those needs :) Multiple VMs, within the same network, depending on each other.

That actually improves security for everyone.

@greg@identi.ca You are correct. We intentionally keep the services light and simple. Only flat html on the main web server (no PHP, SQL, CGI, etc) keeps me from having to worry about compromises because of someone else's "ooops". But there must be a way to get a bunch of tech geeks to pitch in for the hardware to run what you want and a line to put it on.. heck with a secure VPN could probably run as several machines in various peoples homes.

I'd be fine with using other people's computers (egads!) as long as I trust them in similar ways (are also a collective, or as close as it can be, and are not easily swayed by the FBI for backdoors, like rsync.net for data storage).
